Nantucket New School
Students Collaborate with Local Scientists
Eighth grade students have begun work on a number of science projects to be presented during the School's annual Science Fair on May 25th.

The projects this year will involve a collaborative effort between New School students and local nonprofit organizations committed to stewardship and environmental awareness here on Nantucket. Assisting the eighth graders in their research this year will be scientists from the University of Massachusetts-Boston (Dr. Sarah Oktay), Nantucket Conservation Foundation (Karen Beattie and Kelly Omand), the Massachusetts Audubon Society (Ernie Steinauer), Sustainable Nantucket (Beth Davies), and the Land Council (Emily MacKinnon).

Research topics will include: effects of commercial fertilizer on groundwater; comparison of local tap water vs. bottled water; seed viability studies regarding invasive species; and propagation of wild grasses on conservation land.

Students must complete their projects independently. To accommodate the needs of both scientist and student-researchers the New School has arranged for each mentor to meet with their team of students in their respective offices/laboratories during the regular school day.
