Nantucket New School
Field Trips & Activities
One of the major tenets of the school is our connection to Nantucket Island. As a result, the Nantucket New School regularly looks for ways for its students to go out into the community to take advantage of the island’s countless natural and cultural resources.

NNS fifth-grade ecology students take weekly field trips to study the island’s habitat including trips to open moors, ponds, beaches, and swamps. In addition, many of the students will take field trips to the Maria Mitchell Association, the Nantucket Historical Association, the Nantucket Atheneum, and other cultural institutions on Nantucket.

The school also strives for purposeful trips away from Nantucket to enrich our students’ NNS experiences.
For many years the school’s third- and fourth-grade students have spent an over-night at Boston’s Museum of Science. The trip also includes a walk on the city’s historic Freedom Trail.

The upper school students are also given opportunities to plan field trips that include elements of community service and leadership training — some recent trips have included volunteering in New Orleans, serving in soup kitchens in Boston, spending the night in a Habitat for Humanity village, and white-water rafting in Maine.

The 2006-07 school year commenced for the upper school students and teachers with a hiking trip in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Organized by the Appalachian Mountain Club, the students and teachers were led in bonding and leadership exercises while experiencing the thrill of a hiking and camping trip.

NNS also offers a wide selection of extracurricular programs. They include music classes in the cello and violin with Mollie Glazer and guitar instruction with Andy Bullington. Glazer also directs a chamber group of student musicians. Students are also given the chance to sign up for NNS clubs and community service projects. A large percentage of NNS students participate in Nantucket community sports programs including soccer and swimming.
