Good evening and TGIF to all!!
We had our first COVID related missed classes of the year today, as both the 3rd grade and PK were home as the result of close contacts that seemed to expand by the hour. Both classes tested negative through rapid tests over the last two days, and PCR results should be returned this weekend. It is currently our plan to have both classes back in school on Monday, and we will be testing all those students throughout the week.
Tonight was supposed to be the faculty holiday party, but COVID conditions are just not conducive for that kind of celebration right now. I will readily admit that I love the pub crawl format that we have adopted for this event, and we will get this done at some point soon. It is a great community focused evening, and we have been lucky to have some great restaurants host us over the years. Stay tuned faculty!
This will be the last Friday update before the vacation. Please have a happy, relaxing, and safe holiday season. There have been some great moments to celebrate since September, and we are hopeful for even more success as we enter a new year.
Below is the schedule for Friday’s holiday festival. If any changes are required because of COVID issues, we will email you immediately. Friday 12/17 is a half day of school and drop -off and pick-up locations and times are also below.
Staggered Drop-off:
7:45 a.m. Grades 5-8 Drop-off at the Dreamland
8:00 a.m. Grades K-4 Drop-off at the Dreamland
(for families with students in multiple grades, please drop-off at either time)
8:00 a.m. PK Drop-off at Strong Wings and they'll be transported to the Dreamland prior to the 10:00 a.m. Holiday Celebration.
Program:
10:00 a.m. Holiday Celebration at the Dreamland. All are invited!
11:00 a.m. Holiday movie at the Dreamland. Parents, families, and friends are invited to stay with their child(ren) or may depart for Winter Break!
Pick-up:
12:00 p.m. Pick-up at the Dreamland for all remaining students who did not depart with their parents.
It has been an emotional year on many levels, but I am not sure I have ever been filled with more gratitude entering the holiday season. The New School is incredibly lucky to be the beneficiary of a dedicated group of teachers, a supportive parent community, and an amazing student body. The student stroll was a great example of the spirit of this community. Our families’ commitment to taking care of others and making sure NNS children understand the value of generosity serves as a great example to all and certainly supports the tone of the holidays.

LOOK UP: A new Astronomy Program at the Maria Mitchell Association
The MMA’s Look Up Program provides the opportunity for every student in the Nantucket school system, public and private, to visit Loines Observatory and learn from our professional astronomers entirely free of charge.
- WHO? Nantucket students, teachers, and their families!
- WHAT? A special stargazing program, geared towards students ages 5-18. At Look Up, the MMA astronomers will lead constellation tours, guide participants through viewing stations, and discuss the cutting-edge research being conducted at the Maria Mitchell Observatory.When students attend Look Up, they will receive a special t-shirt to celebrate their participation in this program. The MMA will also have a Spanish translator at all Look Up Programs.
