Job Title: Upper School Mathematics Teacher

Department:  Upper School

Job Summary

Nantucket New School seeks a dynamic, student-centered mathematics teacher who is passionate about fostering foundational academic skills through conceptual math practices. This role is ideal for educators who thrive in a collaborative environment, value professional growth, and are committed to nurturing the whole child.  

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position. Limited housing may be available.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare subject-specific, developmentally-appropriate lessons for students in the subject area of mathematics across the Upper School.  This includes one section of each grade level (5, 6, 7, 8)
  • Provide instruction in an interactive learning environment.
  • Serve as an advisor to one grade level.
  • Collaborate with other teachers in a community of lifelong learners.
  • Manage student behavior to foster a culture of belonging, encourage personal responsibility, and nurture intellect and individuality in all students.
  • Perform non-teaching duties to support and assist students and the school as assigned
  • Observe and evaluate every student's academic, social, and emotional growth, keeping appropriate records and preparing progress reports
  • Communicate with parents through conferences and other means to discuss students' academic progress as well as their social and emotional growth

Essential Teacher Qualifications

  • Deep knowledge of subject matter, including mathematics curriculum for Middle School age students (Grades 5-8), Singapore math, and project-based learning
  • Able to differentiate instruction for a range of learning styles
  • Able to create a positive classroom community and build relationships with students and families 
  • Strong communication skills with students, employees, and parents
  • Open to feedback and continuous growth
  • Creative in instructional and classroom management strategies
  • Cooperative, collaborative, supportive, flexible
  • Bachelor's degree, with a Master’s degree preferred
  • Coursework in education is not required, nor is certification
