Outdoor Education Teacher

Nantucket New School | PK-8 | Full-Time Position

Position Overview

Nantucket New School seeks an Outdoor Education Teacher to develop and deliver programming for students ages 2.9 to 14 years old. This position utilizes our rock climbing wall, high ropes course, sport court, and the island’s natural environment to support student development through physical and outdoor education.

Key Responsibilities

  • Early Childhood Foundation (Ages 2.9-6): Design gross motor skill development activities that build coordination, balance, and spatial awareness through age-appropriate movement and outdoor exploration
  • Lower School Skill Building (Ages 6-10): Implement structured physical education curriculum that develops fundamental movement skills, introduces team sports concepts, and builds confidence through progressive outdoor challenges
  • Upper School Leadership (Ages 11-14): Create adventure-based learning experiences using our high ropes course and rock wall that develop problem-solving abilities, peer leadership skills, and personal responsibility
  • Cross-Age Programming: Facilitate mixed-age outdoor education activities that allow older students to mentor younger ones while exploring Nantucket's trails and natural environments
  • Social-Emotional Development: Use group challenges and outdoor experiences to build communication skills, resilience, and collaborative problem-solving across all age groups
  • Physical Development: Assess and adapt activities to meet individual developmental needs, ensuring appropriate progression from basic motor skills to complex movement patterns
  • Extended Day Programming: Lead outdoor after-school programming until 5pm for small groups of Pre-K and Kindergarten students, focusing on unstructured play and nature exploration

Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Outdoor Education, or an education related field
  • CPR, First Aid, and Lifeguard certification before school opens on September 3
  • Experience working with children across multiple age groups
Preferred
  • Outdoor education or adventure programming experience
  • Rock climbing or high ropes course certifications
  • Background in child development
