I can feel a shift on the island. There’s more traffic, it’s busier downtown, and lights are on in businesses that were dark throughout the winter months. As someone new to year-round living on Nantucket, it’s an interesting transition to observe. There is anticipation and heightened energy as families shift work schedules, looking ahead to the busiest time of the year on Nantucket. Warmer temperatures and sunnier days only add to the feeling that summer is just around the corner.
And, there’s still much learning to do! Kindergartners are spending the final 26 days confirming their understanding of the alphabet. Third graders are putting the final touches on their large-scale maps of the continents. Fourth graders are out and about on the island, interviewing at important Nantucket businesses and learning about how this island works. Seventh graders are studying phenology (the study of the seasons changing), just as the 8th graders are writing up their Community Service reflections and preparing for their capstone trip to Washington, DC, at the end of May. We have good work to complete before our final day in June.
