Turkeys
Early this week, we received many phone calls and texts regarding our wandering turkey flock. For any of you who have encountered them on campus, they’re incredibly friendly and curious. They had taken a journey all the way onto the edge of Nobadeer Farm Road and slowly wandered up through the pickup line. Luckily, a few of our students were on hand to help me guide them safely past the cars and plenty of parents in the pickup line got a chuckle from the scene.
As these turkeys approach adulthood they’ll want to venture further and further from us. Our campus shepherding dog, Utah, herded them into an enclosure at Strong Wings, so we won’t need to worry about them wandering off again.
Friday Speaker Series: Calling all community members!
An important part of the school day here at Nantucket New School is gathering together for Morning Meeting at 9:45am. Students from different grades take turns opening the meeting, asking for “QCA”s (questions, comments, and announcements), presenting their work, and closing the meeting. The school gathers in divisions on Tuesdays and Thursdays and as a whole school community on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
This year, we’d like to restart the tradition of having outside speakers come to present to the student body every Friday. We’ve already had two visitors this year - one from the Maria Mitchell Association and another from Egan Maritime. The students loved hearing about the upcoming solar eclipse and the recently uncovered shipwreck right here on Nantucket!
We’re reaching out to our parent community to see if any of you would like to come speak on a topic that interests you. Perhaps you have something to share about your job, a hobby you enjoy, a language you speak…the sky’s the limit!
